The 2010 U.S.A. census reports that 16.3% of the total population reported being from Hispanic or Latino origin and this number is expected to rise. In some states, the percent is as high as 38%. This two-day seminar perpares healthcare providers to effectively communicate in basic Spanish phrases. During this interactive course, held in Mercerville/Trenton, NJ, participants will gain a primary understanding of the Spanish language. An overview of Spanish speaking cultures and their importance to holistic patient care plus an introduction to basic pronunciation, the alphabet, grammar, and vocabulary for beginning Spanish is covered. By the end of the 12-hour seminar, participants will be able to verbalize basic Spanish salutations, a beginning health assessment, and conversational medical phrases.
Course objective:
* Identify cultural issues for Spanish-speaking patients.
* Verbalize basic grammar usage concepts in Spanish.
* Use greetings and introductions effectively.
* Expand vocabulary and grammar concepts of time, locations and prepositions.
* Use basic present tense of verbs effectively.
* Practice patient case scenarios using medical vocabulary.
* Discuss definitions and concepts for cultural competence.
Who should attend: Registered nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in learning Spanish in a two-day immersion course.
All participants will receive instructional materials and a continental breakfast. Those seeking live continuing nursing education will earn 12.0 contact hours (6.0 hours per day) after attending the seminar in its entirety and handing in the evaluation form.

Tracey Long, RN, BSN, MS, CDE grew up in sunny California and later braved the cold in Provo, Utah where she earned two degrees at Brigham Young University in nursing and Spanish. In college, she traveled with the speech and debate team, studied abroad in Europe, and then toured the Orient with the National Ballroom Dance Champion Team. Tracey served one and one-half years as a health welfare missionary to Colombia. She developed Spanish programs in health education and diabetes for local hospitals in Las Vegas, Nevada where she now resides. She earned her masters degree in public health education at the California College of Health Sciences and is currently a PhD Student at UNLV in nursing/health education. She currently teaches as an adjunct faculty at UNLV in medical Spanish and nursing at CCSN. To keep her sense of humor she has taught home preschool for 13 years.

Cancellation and Refund Policy for Seminars:
Phone cancellations must be confirmed in writing. Cancellations received four weeks prior to the seminar receive a full refund of the registration fee. Cancellations received after four weeks and up to seven days prior to the seminar are assessed a $50 processing fee. Cancellations received seven days prior to the seminar or “no shows” are nonrefundable. Registration fees are transferable to an upcoming seminar within the same calendar year (expires December 31 each year) or to another participant. In the event that a seminar is cancelled, a full refund will be issued.
